Review of the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB portable hard disc drive

Meet the Seagate Backup Plus Slim, another portable hard disc drive based on the tried-and-true ST2000LM007, which was released in the first quarter of 2016.

The Backup Plus Slim (STHN1000402) comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities and is available in light blue, black, or brushed metal. These drives are listed on Amazon for $60 and $80, respectively.

The Backup Plus Slim is a portable hard disc drive with a USB 3.0 connection and an adapter for the older USB 2.0 standard. It’s about the same size as an SD card, but much thinner, so it can easily fit in a pocket or purse.

The drive comes with a one-year limited warranty, which is the same as for most portable hard disc drives (that I know of). If you don’t need to protect your data from physical damage, you can always get a three-year warranty instead.

It also comes with two software packages: Seagate Dashboard and Seagate Media Plus. The first one allows you to manage all your drives and backup data on your computer; it also provides some information about each one of them (like how much space they’re using).

The Backup Plus Slim is powered by a single AA battery that should last for about two years under normal use (as we saw in our review of the old ST2000LM007). The battery

OUR OPINION

One has to ask why Seagate has released a new Backup Plus version. It utilises the same three-year-old drive as its predecessor and doesn’t add anything to the table, especially given the considerably higher price tag – though you do receive Mylio Create and Adobe CC included software.

Seagate’s Mylio software is a cloud storage service that allows users to store and access files from any device. It also allows you to share your files with friends, family or colleagues. You can do this by uploading the files through a web browser, or you can send them directly from your mobile phone to their email address.

The Backup Plus Slim comes with Seagate Media Plus software. This allows you to backup all your important data on different computers and mobile devices, including Windows PC, Macs, Android phones and tablets and iPhones. It also enables you to encrypt your data using 256-bit AES encryption technology for added security.

The Backup Plus Slim is a great product at an affordable price – but it does come with one major drawback: it doesn’t support the new USB Type-C connector standard for charging smartphones and tablets. So if you have a smartphone that supports USB Type-C charging then it would be wise to consider the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB instead of this one.

Design

The Backup Plus Slim doesn’t stand out in any way; its design is simple and functional, and it’s not attempting to win any prizes. A polycarbonate chassis with a thin brushed metal cover was chosen by Seagate. Apart from the Seagate logo and a white status light, there’s not much to look at here.

A rubber grip on the front and a thicker rubber ring around the body make it comfortable to hold and use, even for longer periods of time.

The drive is driven by a single NAND flash memory chip, which is hidden behind a removable metal cover. This can be opened using the key located at the bottom of the drive – Seagate says that this will be useful if you want to upgrade your drive in future or change its operating system.

The metal cover also protects the flash memory chip against physical damage, such as dropping it on a hard surface. Once you’ve removed this cover, you’ll find two screws securing it in place.

The Mylio software is pre-installed on the drive, but you can download additional software from Seagate’s website if you wish (see ‘Additional resources’ below). There are two versions of Mylio: Mylio Create and Mylio Pro.

Performance \ BENCHMARKS

In our benchmark testing, the Seagate Backup Plus Slim fared as follows:141MBps (read); 137MBps (write) on CrystalDiskMark (write)144 MB/s (read, 256 MB); 137 MB/s (write, 256mb)

As previously stated, this device employs the outdated ST2000LM007 drive, which has two 1TB platters rotating at 5,400 RPM with 128MB cache. Surprisingly, that drive costs more when purchased separately than when purchased as part of the Backup Plus Slim. It’s unbelievable, yet it’s real.

Although the Backup Plus Slim doesn’t support USB Type-C charging, it’s slightly cheaper than the Seagate Backup Plus 2TB, which does support USB Type-C charging.

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim can be used as a portable hard drive. It’s great for this purpose because it’s light and slim, so you can easily slip it into your pocket or bag and take it with you if you’re travelling. The Backup Plus Slim is also compatible with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems.

If you’re looking for a drive that supports USB Type-C charging or one that offers higher storage capacity then look no further than the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB. It’s ideal for storing movies and music files as well as documents – but only if you have a smartphone that supports USB Type-C charging (which is likely to be all of them).

The competition is fierce.

While Seagate’s 5TB portable hard drive has no competition, things are very different for lesser capacity goods, including Seagate’s earlier versions.

For example, the earlier Backup Plus Slim costs $45 and $60 for 1TB and 2TB units, respectively. Another Seagate series, Expansion, is as competitive, with prices of $40 and $65 for the identical capacities (note: all quoted prices are from Amazon.com, and correct at the time of writing).

Western Digital and Toshiba have somewhat higher pricing. Silicon Power, which sells a 4TB shockproof and waterproof external hard disc drive for $110 – the same price as the new Backup Plus Slim – deserves special note.

The competition is fierce, but the Seagate Backup Plus Slim is a good choice for a portable hard drive. It’s not perfect, but its price and capacity are tough to beat.

If you’re looking for a drive with even higher capacity than the 2TB model, then you may be better off purchasing an external hard disc drive such as the Seagate 4TB Expansion or Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB.

Conclusion

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim portable hard drive is an upgrade from the company’s earlier versions and boasts a number of advantages over its competitors. It’s small, lightweight and stylish – perfect for slipping into your pocket or bag and taking with you on your travels.

The fact that it has two 1TB drives means that it offers plenty of storage space – if you want more space than that then purchase one of Seagate’s larger drives (such as the 5TB). The Backup Plus Slim can be used as a portable hard drive; it has enough space to store movies and music files plus documents.

Although it doesn’t support USB Type-C charging, it’s slightly cheaper than the Seagate Backup Plus 2TB which does support USB Type-C charging.

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim is available from Amazon.com for $99.99, which is a decent price considering its capabilities. The Seagate Backup Plus Slim portable hard drive is the best USB-C external hard drive on the market at the moment (July 2018).
